Artist of the Moment

KARISMIC

Visit my shop View my bio

My name is Alicia and I have been doing art since 2011. I have been a member of Gasr since shortly after it started and I really enjoy the time I have spent here and all the wonderful people I have met. I started making art because its something I always enjoyed but never felt I was good at it. At least not with pencil and paper. I have found digital art to be comforting and I enjoy making art to share with people and I hope everyone enjoys what I make just as much as I do. I am a 35 year old stay at home mom with 2 kids. Art gives me relief from a 5 year old and an almost 14 year old. Thank you for reading and I hope that me being the artist of the moment will bring me some new buyers and friends!

GASR Time

helloo. I recently wanted to try out photoshop to paint (im a paint tool sai user). If I do use photoshop, it's to animate what I've already painted/add effects. For some reason, on photoshop, my pressure sensitivity isn't working at all...
(btw this is photoshop cs3, I even tried it on my photoshop elements 8 and 9 {they came with
my older tablet so why not})
I feel like I've tried almost everything like even the most basic thing by pressing that little button to supposedly enable pen pressure:

playing around with brush settings and setting the shape dynamics to pen pressure:

If I could describe how it draws... its rlly abrupt.. like it doesnt fade out, the capacity
of the strokes doesn't get affected by how much pressure I put on my tablet with my pen.
and of course it doesnt have any stability settings but even sai with 0 stability looks way better

I tried looking in my pen tablet settings but there's really nothing I could do.
I also looked on different forums and sites for help but most of them suggested what I've already tried.

Sorry if i sound really negative jus rlly confused

Hi, I use photoshop cc, but the settings are pretty much the same.
Photoshop's brushes are all custom settings. The default brushes you are using need to be set up. I would recommend getting a brush set with the settings already done up.

The reason why it doesnt fade etc, is because you need to enable all of the settings towards the type of brush you want and set them all up individually.

If you want I can share a few brushes with you.

@Cain I did try playing around with the settings a bit, but couldn't really get them to work. I'll try again tho!
Also I'd appreciate it a lot if you could share some, if it's not a problem with you :~)

okay I'd pm you my brushes.
On your brush presets it should allow you to "replace current brushes"
After you've saved the brushes I give you to a location of your choice, replace the current ones you have with those.

@Cain for some reason the brushes aren't compatible with my photoshop programs (cs3, 8.0, 9.0).
However, I have managed to fix the pressure sensitivty and the feel of the brush through the brush settings, thank you!

oh its probably because cs3 is older.
And nice, if you look at deviant art you probably will be able to find more brushes as well for cs3.
Also, no problem, good know its working out for you.

How did you fix it? It might be good for someone in the future who has the same issue. + What is your tablet if you don't mind sharing?

@Queen I went into the brush settings:

and made sure "shape dynamics" and "other dynamics" were ticked.
Then, in "shape dynamics" I made sure the size jitter and angle jitter
were controlled under "pen pressure":

then in other dynamics, I set "capacity jitter" and "flow jitter"
(this is key as it lets you control the lightness and darkness of your lines
helping you blend too)

(some photoshop programs have this at the top bar)

*its also good to know that photoshop does not have a stabilizer
(you can purchase a program for that), so it takes a bit of practice
and a steady hand.

I have the Wacom Bamboo Capture (they're discontinued but they pretty much work the same
as the basic intuos tablets)

Ohhh, okay okay I see.

I have CS6 and all of those settings are usually set automatically when you hit the pen pressure tool. I very rarely have had to go in and set things to pen pressure manually. I'm wondering if that is just an added feature for newer photoshops?

Thanks for explaining + showing screenshots! I have a hella old tablet too. It's the first one I ever owned and I'm not getting rid of her til she poops out on me, LOL. I've had it since 2009 I want to say.

@Queen No problem! I'm thinking about getting cs6. Nothings really wrong with cs3. Maybe it might be more convenient. And yes! I don't think I'll get rid of my tablet. It's pretty much as good as new! I've tried someone's intuos tablet and I really didn't feel a difference.

When it comes to the lower end options of a tablet line, there really is no difference. You'd have to get to the expensive tablets with the x amount of extra levels of sensitivity for it to start mattering.

My grandfather bought a fancy tablet for $300 and I still prefer the one I paid $50 for.  Honestly, if I was going to upgrade, I'd get this:

@Queen I guess it just comes down to personal preference sometimes.
I think you can still come to the same outcome for art it's just a matter of convenience.
But, wow that's a really nice tablet! Love the fact that you can draw with your own pencil or pen.
Sat Oct 08, 2016 1:09 am
Yes, and the best part about it is that they aren't charging you hundreds of dollars for it either.

$169 for the tablet and a bunch of accessories and whatnot, plus free shipping. I'm thinking about pre-ordering it as a birthday gift for myself since the official release is Nov 1, 11 days before my birthday.

That's only a little bit more than a low-end tablet now-a-days. When I first saw this tablet, I expected a $599+ price tag slapped on it. The technology behind it is interesting.

@Queen You and me both! When I first saw it I thought it was really expensive but now that I see the price, wow! I really do hope you can get it. It seems really great.
